Do you have any idea what a wedding cake topper is? What a great question. Not many individuals know what wedding cake toppers are, but they are those little “figures” or “statues” that sit on top of a wedding cake. They seem to yell out “Notice Me…I’m Something Fantastic…I Matter!”. From their extremely humble beginnings there is a tremendous variety of cake toppers available in the marketplace today. Let’s spend a few seconds learning their background…

Now that we are done with our formal description, let’s turn our focus to the history. Although no accurate records exist of the first time an individual put a tiny little figure on the very top of a wedding cake, we do have various traditions. One very popular tradition states that a young woman was engaged and getting married, and she was trying to figure out some way in which she could show the love that she and her boyfriend shared for one another. Her dad happened to be the city baker, and she gave him the assignment. Being a baker he obviously baked a wedding cake, but he one step further and added a little model to the extreme top of the cake. He positioned a model of his daughter and future son-in-law on top of the cake. This was to show off the adoration that these two young people shared for each other as they started their new life together.

Is this story factual? Perhaps. Is it fictional? It might be. Does it foreshadow the prominence that the cake topper would have on not only the wedding cake but the big day? For sure. This mere baker of cakes probably had no idea what a trend he had begun. The wedding day would never be the same again…

What comes to mind when you think of the 50’s? The King (Elvis) and Good ole’ & Roll right? Well cake toppers were destined to become much more popular than ever during these years as soldiers returning from World War II started to settle down and raise families.

In the world today we see that wedding cake toppers are very popular. Models have changed somewhat to reflect the changing times, but they are popular none-the-less. Today you can get cake toppers that depict mixed race marriages, and same-sex marriages as well. Many funny wedding cake toppers are being sold these days. One such model depicts the pretty grabbing her new groom by the collar…preventing him from running away from the altar. Another shows her dragging him back to the preacher after he has made his getaway. Some wedding cake toppers even show the various things that the happy couple can enjoy together.
