When Thinking About Divorce Written on July 19, 2009, by Moses Wright.

If someone is thinking about divorce, the reason for considering divorce is often an emotional one. The person would be wise to consider many factors before making a final decision about divorce.

Children are negatively affected by both divorce and living in a conflicted household. Parents thinking about divorce must consider which is better for the wellbeing of the children.

The individual spouses financial situation is another factor to consider. When there is a divorce, the parent with custody of the children often struggles the most financially. Child support is used to help alleviate the financial strain on the parent with primary custody, but it often fails to do so.

Many times, the spouses unhappiness is blamed on the marriage when there may be several other causes for unhappiness. Some studies show that people who expected to be happier after divorce were even unhappier afterwards.

Many marriages have times when one or both spouses are unhappy. Often, the unhappiness is only a temporary problem that fades. Divorce during one of these temporary periods of unhappiness could be unnecessary.

Another factor to consider is whether or not counseling may resolve the issues of the marriage. There are many forms of marriage counseling, such as retreats for married couples, counseling by clergy, or professional family therapy or marriage counseling.

Marriage mediation is an alternative to marriage counseling which can help prevent the couples divorce. A neutral mediator meets with the couple and works to help the couple compromise and resolve the marital issues.

Not all marital problems are alike. For severe marital problems like physical or emotional abuse, divorce may be the best decision. Churches that teach against divorce usually recognize that no one should live in a household with domestic violence or other types of abuse.

Editor’s Note: The author refers to mediation as an alternative to marriage counseling. It is also an alternative to litigation should you decide to get divorced as it is a very effective means of working out all the terms of divorce so that litigation can be avoided.
