Opening Up: The Secrets Of An Honest Relationship Written on November 23, 2009, by Lily St. Thomas.

There is no doubt that an open communication channel is the key for a successful relationship. The question in most cases however is how to get your husband to speak. Women talk about things much more openly than men. So if you are not getting what you want, you might want to consider making some changes.

Choose when to approach

It’s best to approach when you are already engaged in conversation instead of interrupting something else that is going on. Mostly, conversations happen during a meal, in bed or while you are doing something together. These are great opportunities to get him to open up.

Pick the right time

Make sure to see what state of mind your partner is in. If he has just returned from a long day and needs to relax than it would probably not be the best time to press him to open up.

Provide a personal example

It is important to give your partner an example of the time of sharing you are looking for. So whenever possible, look to provide intimate information about your feelings and hopes. Talk about your past experiences, about your fears and your fantasies. This will help him see that sharing is not that bad.

Don’t dredge up the past

Men really don’t enjoy lingering on the same, sore topic. If he did something to hurt or offend you and he said he’s sorry, then it’s probably best to accept it and move on.

Be careful with your response

In many cases your partner may talk about far fetched ideas that you will not agree with. It’s important however to let them talk and express these desires before you respond. Remember, our objective is to get him to open up.

Be a good listener

Now that he’s talking, just listen. Don’t turn on the television or answer a phone call when he is opening up. Instead of interrupting or interjecting, give him a chance to put things in his own words. It can be hard to keep your mouth shut, sometimes. But being a good listener speaks volumes.
